In 1973, a group of dedicated college students from across New York State united to create a statewide organization to shape public policy while teaching students and community members organizing, advocacy and civic engagement skills. Since that pivotal year, NYPIRG has combined the expertise of our tireless staff with the power of the people to win major victories for the health, environment, democratic institutions and quality of life of New York State’s residents. This year marks NYPIRG's 35th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, we held our anniversary bash on Friday, November 7, 2008, at The Central Park Boathouse in Manhattan. Nearly 375 guests joined us to celebrate NYPIRG’s work and to honor Eileen Hershenov and Mike Pratt, two former NYPIRG staff members whose efforts have improved the lives of countless New Yorkers.
