Are New York's Playgrounds Getting Safer?
In 2004, NYPIRG conducted a statewide survey of 157 playgrounds using a similar form to the survey used for this year's survey. In some categories, there is improvement in playground safety over the two year period in the areas of toxic playground risk, unsafe equipment height and unsafe swings. In other categories, surveyors identified more potential hazards in 2006 than in 2004 in the areas of unsafe surfacing and inadequate fall zones. In the hazard areas of head entrapment and clothing entanglement the percentages were about the same in 2004 and 2006.
