Are New York's Playgrounds Getting Safer?

In 2004, NYPIRG conducted a statewide survey of 157 playgrounds using a similar form to the survey used for this year's survey. In some categories, there is improvement in playground safety over the two year period — in the areas of toxic playground risk, unsafe equipment height and unsafe swings. In other categories, surveyors identified more potential hazards in 2006 than in 2004 — in the areas of unsafe surfacing and inadequate fall zones. In the hazard areas of head entrapment and clothing entanglement the percentages were about the same in 2004 and 2006.
