Consumers have faced higher natural gas prices in recent years, but now NYPIRG's Fuel Buyers Group is using its consumer bargaining power to bring members savings of up to 10% a year. With the deregulation of the natural gas industry the actual cost of natural gas has been separated from the cost of its delivery, allowing consumers the opportunity to shop around for a better price.

NYPIRG has contracted with Stuyvesant Energy LLC to provide a discount to residents of New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Orange and Rockland who use natural gas. There will be no interruption in your service and the utility will continue to read your meter and respond to emergencies.

Billing
The utilities are currently working on a consolidated billing system. Until then, you will receive two bills: one from the utility for transportation charges, and one from Stuyvesant Energy for the commodity supply. Stuyvesant offers 30-day payment terms, which is 10 days more than the utility offers, and has budget billing, which allows you to spread your payments over ten months. If a balance is unpaid beyond a reasonable limit, Stuyvesant has the right to return your account to the utility for gas supply.

Contract Terms/Switching
Variable priced accounts is a month-to-month program and you can leave at any time. You are required to fill out a standard, Public Service Commission-approved form which authorizes Stuyvesant Energy to supply you with natural gas.

Supply
Your service and supply will never be interrupted. Your local utility will always be responsible for providing you with gas. In addition, you always have the choice to return to the utility or choose another marketer at no charge.

Transportation Costs
The utility files a tariff with the Public Service Commission and is available for review on their website. The transportation charges are based on your actual usage and the charges are calculated according to the rate classification of your account.

Meters
The local utility will continue to read your meter.

Emergency Service/Problems
Nothing has changed when you have a gas emergency. Call the local utility's emergency number just as you always would. The utility is responsible for their meters, lines, and equipment. Please contact the utility if you have a problem.
