We are exposed to chemicals in every aspect of our daily lives, many of which are hazardous to our health. Over 80,000 different chemicals are in use today. Most of these have not been adequately tested, and many are known or suspected to cause cancer, birth defects, neurological disorders, endocrine disruption or other adverse health effects. Children are especially vulnerable to toxic chemical exposures.
Throughout its history, NYPIRG has campaigned to reduce toxic emissions, clean up contaminated lands and waterways, establish the public's right to know about toxics in their homes and communities, safely manage hazardous waste, encourage alternatives to pesticides, and prevent toxics from being used in consumer products.
