Make your voice heard on the rdSGEIS!
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation's recently revised draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (rdSGEIS) fails to adequately evaluate the potential impacts from fracking, the controversial gas drilling method that threatens our environment and public health.
During DEC's recent public comment period for rdSGEIS, NYPIRG alerted tens of thousands of New Yorkers about the hearings close to their homes and our supporters submitted thousands of comments opposing fracking in New York State.
We need to keep the pressure on Governor Cuomo please take a minute right now to tell him DEC's plan is flawed:
Top Ten rdSGEIS Flaws:
- It does not address cumulative impacts.
- It does not analyze public health impacts.
- It does not classify drilling waste as hazardous waste.
- It allows wastewater to be sent to treatment plants, but none are designed to handle it.
- It does not ban the use of toxic chemicals.
- The setbacks from drinking water supplies expire and or can be waived.
- It does not adequately protect NYC's drinking water infrastructure.
- It does not adequately analyze the impacts to local infrastructure and roads.
- DEC is allowing permitting before formal rulemaking.
- DEC does not have the staff or resources to enforce the guidelines.
