For immediate release: NYPIRG APPLAUDS PRO-STUDENT ASSEMBLY HIGHER EDUCATION PLAN SENATE AND GOVERNOR URGED TO SUPPORT EFFORTS TO HOLD LINE ON TUITION, ENHANCE FINANCIAL AID, AND INVEST IN COLLEGES BUDGET PLANS MUST INCLUDE MID-YEAR ADJUSTMENTS FOR TAP The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) today released the following statement in response to the Assembly plan for the 2006-2007 budget. We applaud the Assemblys rejection of the governors scheme to raise the cost of going to college, said Miriam Kramer, NYPIRGs government policy analyst. The Assembly proposal is an excellent next step in the budget process and we urge the Senate and governor to follow suit and negotiate a final budget that holds the line on tuition and financial aid and invests in the states colleges and universities. Despite the very positive plan, the Assembly budget is missing a key higher education reformmid-year adjustments to Tuition Assistance Program awards, added Kramer. Situations change during the academic year so it makes sense that students and families should be allowed to adjust their financial aid awards in the middle of the year. NYPIRG urged that this reform, currently supported in legislation in the Senate and Assembly (A.9239/S.4984a), be included in the state budget.
