COLLEGE STUDENTS ADVOCATE FOR “STUDENTS’ HIGHER ED BUDGET

DELIVER 16,000 POSTCARDS TO GOVERNOR URGING OPPOSITION TO TUITION HIKES AND ENHANCED FINANCIAL AID AND HIGHER EDUCATION FUNDING

Dozens of college students met with representatives from the Pataki Administration and key legislative staff today to advocate for a student-friendly higher education budget proposal that increases funding for colleges and enhances financial aid without relying on tuition hikes.

The student advocates came armed with some 16,000 postcards endorsed by students from campuses across the state all urging the governor to recommend a budget that is truly favorable to colleges and students.

“The future of New York is at stake and we must have true investment in higher education, starting with the Executive Budget,” said Miriam Kramer, NYPIRG’s higher education coordinator. “The status quo is not satisfactory. We need increased funding for colleges and financial aid, without harmful tuition hikes.”

In the past, the governor has recommended cuts to higher education in his budget proposal through reductions in the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), planned hikes in public college tuition, and reduced funding for opportunity programs and Bundy Aid. The student group aims to reverse those trends.

Students met with representatives from the Division of Budget, the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), and with key higher education legislative staff to urge Governor Pataki to do the following in his budget proposal for 2006-2007:

  • Not to raise tuition of any kind including community colleges, four-year schools, graduate students, and out-of-state or international students.
  • Fully fund TAP (Tuition Assistance Program).
  • Explore expand TAP to include part-time students and to increase funding for graduate and professional students.
  • Increase funding for opportunity programs.
  • Increase funding for community colleges.
  • Increase funding for SUNY and CUNY.
  • Protect Bundy Aid for independent colleges.

While in Albany, the students also had the opportunity to interact with elected officials in town for a special session. They also asked them to press the governor to further invest in higher education in his Executive Budget proposal.
