NYPIRG CALLS ON GOVERNOR TO REJECT CALLS FOR TUITION HIKES URGES TO INVEST IN HIGHER EDUCATION

The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), today, released the following statement in response to the State University of New York (SUNY)'s Friday announcement that they will ask the Governor for a tuition increase and no additional state funding in the 2004-05 budget proposal.

"This is a proposal that adds insult to injury. Recommending increasing tuition after students were so hard hit last year is deplorable. It's wrong to dig further into students' and their families' pockets while letting the state off the hook," said Miriam Kramer, NYPIRG's Higher Education Coordinator.

"The ball now lies in the Governor's court. This plan further shifts the burden to fund the state's public colleges and universities on to the backs of students and their families. This proposal is bad public policy and Governor Pataki should reject it and make the right choice to invest in higher education by holding the line on tuition and at least maintaining current funding," she added.
