KNOW YOUR WELFARE RIGHTS!
STAY IN SCHOOL!

If you are a New York State student who receives public assistance, A NEW LAW CAN HELP YOU STAY IN SCHOOL

The Work-Study/Internship bill was signed into law by Governor Pataki on October 4, 2000. The following are already in effect (since the Spring 2001 semester):

  • If you are a CUNY or SUNY student receiving public assistance and approved to participate in work-study or an internship, every hour in the placement counts towards meeting your welfare work requirement.

  • The social services district (New York City Human Resources Administration, HRA in NYC) cannot unreasonably interfere with your ability to participate in work-study, internship, or externship programs.

  • For all students participating in CUNY or SUNY or any other approved education, training or vocational rehabilitation program, if the local district (HRA in NYC) decides to assign additional work activities, they must make a "reasonable effort" not to conflict with your class schedule.

Your welfare caseworkers may not have up-to-date information on the new law. Find out how this law might be able to help you or someone you know.
