Welcome to the Syracuse University/SUNY ESF chapter of the New York Public Interest Research Group! NYPIRG is the state’s largest non-partisan, student-directed organization focused on developing student leaders, teaching valuable skills, fighting for students' rights, and advocating on issues important to students, including:
- Voter registration and education
- Protecting higher education funding
- Environmental protection
- Social justice
- Consumer rights
- Preventing hunger and homelessness
The NYPIRG chapter at Syracuse was founded in 1973, and we’ve been here on campus ever since, giving undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience and training in organizing coalitions and events, gaining media attention, talking to legislators, and speaking in public.
You can get involved with NYPIRG for just a few hours during the semester or several hours every week. (Learn more about our internship programs here.) Every minute you spend working with NYPIRG, you will learn important and practical skills that will allow you to become a better advocate for issues you care about and you will work to improve New York for years to come.
Just last year, students with NYPIRG joined together in a successful statewide effort to support state and federal bills designed to bring down textbook prices, held clothing and food drives to help the hungry and the homeless, registered students to vote, staffed a Small Claims Court Action Center to counsel students and the community, met with legislators to protect our air and water, exposed dangerous toys. To learn more or get involved, stop by the NYPIRG office, send us an email, or give us a call.
We look forward to meeting you.
