NYPIRG ENVIRONMENT CONSUMER CMAP CAMPUSES FBG VICTORIES

NYPIRG’s 2004-2005 Preliminary Budget Request for Higher Education

Mayor Bloomberg’s 2004-05 preliminary budget cuts to higher education are harmful to New York City.

As such, we urge that the New York City Council:

  • Restore the Safety Net Program that assists the city’s poorest students to afford last year’s tuition increase ($4.5 million);
  • Restore the Peter Vallone Scholarship that allots financial aid to CUNY’s best and brightest students ($5.5 million);
  • Restore funding to CUNY community colleges ($1.9 million)
  • Restore funding cut in the current year budget modification that would continue into next year, deeply impacting full-time faculty lines and student services ($5.4 million); and
  • Increase funding for CUNY's community colleges.

An investment in higher education is an investment in the future of New York.
