Twenty-nine years ago, students from across the state came together to create a better New York. Working with consumer advocate Ralph Nader, they founded NYPIRG. Today, with chapters on 20 campuses, NYPIRG is New York State's largest student directed advocacy organization. Students work with a staff of professional organizers and researchers to fight for lower tuition, a cleaner environment, social justice, consumer protection, student rights and more.

Make a Difference with NYPIRG

NYPIRG provides a much-needed voice for students in the state and county legislatures. Since 1973, NYPIRG has played a key role in winning more than 120 public interest laws and executive orders. NYPIRG has proven that students are effective advocates. NYPIRG students learn how to shape public policy and create social change organizing media events, building campus coalitions, and meeting with local and state legislators to provide student's insight on important issues.

Make the News with NYPIRG

A crucial part of gaining grassroots support for and winning on issues is knowing how to work with the media. NYPIRG staff work with students to write professional news releases, persuasive letters to the editor, effective news articles, and newsletters. NYPIRG students have held hundreds of successful news conferences and organized events that have received coverage by the local press and television media.

Organize with NYPIRG

NYPIRG students across New York State work to build coalitions to support affordable, accessible, quality higher education; combat legislation that does not hold businesses and individuals accountable for their misdeeds; and register thousands of students to vote.

Research with NYPIRG

NYPIRG students and staff have received national acclaim for hard-hitting reports on environmental hazards, higher education, consumer protection, mass transit and more. NYPIRG students also research and publish valuable guides on such topics as local political candidates, ATM fees, unsafe toys, and the dangers of pesticides.

Become a Leader with NYPIRG

NYPIRG gives you a chance to develop leadership skills. You can run a project, be a part of chapter decision making or get elected to NYPIRG's statewide Board of Directors, which makes policy and program decisions for the organization.
