NYPIRG
interns are activists. They don't just read about sweatshops, environmental
degradation, government corruption
or consumer fraud; they do
something about it. Interns lobby state lawmakers to increase funding
for college and universities; organize communities against environmental
hazards; and fight for the rights of sweatshops workers.
NYPIRG has a staff of professional organizers and lobbyist that train
interns how to be effective organizers through hands-on work. Whatever
the issue - environmental and
consumer protection, higher
education funding, student rights, mass
transit or government reform
- students are learning valuable skills while fighting for social
change.
NYPIRG
offers 3 internship programs:
Campus
Internships
Campus interns work closely with the local NYPIRG chapter on their
campus, earning academic credit for their
work. Internships provide structured learning through workshops, guest
speakers and individual meetings with professional project coordinators
trained in student development. Public speaking, campaign strategizing,
media writing, event planning, research for reports and the ins and
outs of state and local government are among the skills an intern
may learn.
Legislative
Internships
Legislative
interns work full-time in Albany in the Spring during the legislative
session for 12 - 15 academic credits and receive a stipend. Through
workshops, discussions, hands-on work and regular meetings with NYPIRG
experts, interns learn how citizens can make government function for
the people. Interns learn to track legislation, prepare and deliver
testimony, lobby legislators and work with the media. Each intern
focuses on a specific issue area, such as environmental protection,
higher education accessibility, government reform, student rights
or consumer rights. Click here to learn more about this internship opportunity and how to submit an application.
