NEW YORK PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP FUND
The New York Public Interest Research Group Fund (NYPIRG) seeks qualified candidates for its New York City Equity and Resiliency Projects Regional Director position. The Regional Director will play a lead role in running community organizing, education, and advocacy efforts on critical public interest measures. The Regional Director will work with community members and college students to generate grassroots power to address climate resiliency, mass transit, and civic equity plans in New York City, providing a rewarding, meaningful, and exciting experience for civic-minded activists.
Description: The Regional Director will work with NYPIRG Fund’s staff of researchers, organizers, and attorneys to lead NYPIRG’s New York City policy agenda. They will advocate for City policies that combat climate change, expand mass transit access, and promote civic power. The Regional Director will initially be responsible for NYPIRG’s projects to electrify new City buildings to get off fracked gas, and to improve mass transit access and affordability through NYPIRG’s Straphangers Campaign. It is expected that the Regional Director will be involved in a broad range of advocacy and public education work on issues that are under consideration by the New York City government.
By joining NYPIRG, the Regional Director will join an organization which has led critical fights to ban fracking; shut down polluting incinerators; win billions in mass transit funding, system enhancements, and fare discounts; improve recycling; and support renewable energy, sustainability, and energy efficiency programs.
Primary Responsibilities Include :
- Execute research and policy analysis on key issue areas
- Coordinate advocacy efforts at the municipal level in New York City
- Run community organizing drives to connect members of the public and college students to their City representatives
- Prepare supporting materials, testimonies, research and reports, and other resources
- Earn media coverage for priority campaigns and build relationships among news outlets and staff
- Convene and contribute to coalition efforts, including by engaging in advocacy efforts, conducting research, and coordinating grassroots actions
- Coordinate with other NYPIRG staff to implement New York City equity and resiliency program plans
Training: Regional Directors go through a minimum of two weeks of training each year. The Regional Director also participates in regular regional staff trainings and statewide student activism conferences.
Salary & Benefits: The Regional Director position has a starting annualized salary range between $65,000 and $75,000, depending on experience, and includes a generous health benefits package, two weeks of paid vacation, and unlimited sick days.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a minimum of five years of experience in policy advocacy work. Exceptional interpersonal communication and public speaking skills, strong writing skills, and a commitment to social change are required, as well as the desire to work with community members and college students. Ability to work with a wide array of personality types and to think on one’s feet is highly desired. Busy days, occasional weekends, and some travel is necessary. The Regional Director’s work schedules are designed to consider the New York City Council official calendar as well as the traditional collegiate academic year. The location of the job is in New York City. A bachelor's degree, at a minimum, is required. Experience with community and student organizations, campaigns, or media is helpful. Proficiency with social media is a must. Fluency in Spanish is highly desired, but not required. The ideal candidate is a versatile, creative, and energetic person capable of handling numerous tasks expeditiously to meet the demands of ever evolving policy debates.
