Support NYPIRG’s Mission

Here are two ways that you can help us counter federal attacks on our nation’s bedrock environmental and consumer protections:

1. Take Action

Contact your congressional representatives, including New York’s U.S. Senators, and urge them to:
  • Defend the National Environmental Policy Act, a crucial environmental law that gives the public a voice when it comes to proposed projects like the Williams NESE fracked gas pipeline, which was rejected in 2019 and 2020 because it failed to meet New York’s water quality standards.
  • Support site-neutral payment reform, which would ensure that routine healthcare services and procedures cost Medicare and its beneficiaries the same amount, whether they are performed at a hospital-owned facility or an independent clinic. This common-sense fix will stop hospital systems from using their off-campus facilities to overcharge Medicare and its beneficiaries, and lead to better access and more affordable care.

*Use NYPIRG’s Representative Finder to find your federal representatives and get their contact information.

Sample message:

Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I am a resident of [YOUR MUNICIPALITY], NY. I urge [REPRESENTATIVE NAME] to stand up for our nation’s bedrock environmental and healthcare protections. “Permitting reform” is being used as an excuse to fast-track fossil fuel pipelines. Please protect my right to clean air and water by defending the National Environmental Policy Act from these federal attacks. Also, please fight for site-neutral payment reform, which would help make healthcare more affordable for Medicare beneficiaries and save taxpayers money, as part of any congressional agreement. Thank you.

2. Donate

Please make your vital, tax-deductible contribution today to give us the resources that we need to continue fighting and winning! Every dollar goes toward our urgent mission to strengthen democracy, fight for the rights of consumers and voters, and protect the environment and public health — and right now, your support is more critical than ever. Thank you!

NYPIRG’S REACTION TO GOVERNOR HOCHUL’S NUCLEAR POWER PLAN
New Yorkers must not be fooled a third time about the purported benefits of nuclear power.
The public should demand that Governor Hochul deliver a full independent public vetting of her latest nuclear power plan. That means allowing the entire state to be part of the discussion, examining the expected costs (including the industry’s history of cost overruns), examining the waste storage requirements (on-site forever?), and examining the full cost impacts both directly and indirectly, such as what New York Power Authority projects will be scrapped in order to fund the building of a new nuclear power facility. The fact that the governor is eyeing new, untested approaches to nuclear power underscore the need for a full, transparent process.
